Sometimes bigger is not better

I have OCD.

Clutter freaks me the fuck out.

Christmas is tough.  Christmas toys are tougher.  They are the ultimate channel of much of my obsessions this time of year.   When I shop, I think of practicality… clothing, books, art supplies, DVD’s- and , maybe, a few toys that fit in the palm of my hand that are cheap enough to justify sneaking in the trash within the next month.

As they get older, this has become easier.  Jewelry and costly electronics top their lists and put me in the poor house, but at least the house is not cluttered, right? It eventually may be a box, but it will be a clean box, damn it!

Big toys are the work of the devil.  Doll houses, for example, were invented by Lucifer, I’m sure of it.  Same thing with life sized dolls- those things are evil!

My mother in law is very generous on Christmas.  HOWEVER, she is in cahoots with the dark side.  Either that or she thinks we live in an empty Sam’s warehouse where space is not an issue.    She’s of the belief that bigger is better.   If they can ride it and it will take up half of my living space, they will like it.  If it takes two rolls of paper to wrap it, she’ll buy it.

She was always the one to buy the rocking horses, wagons, and bikes.  I’m pretty sure that she owns stock in those GINORMOUS gift bags that can hold humans because every year, each of my kids have a present wrapped in them.

Each Christmas Eve, we go to her house.  We leave with a minvan full of presents and 4 children in unnatural contortioned positions just to fit the gifts in the car.

This year, I am hoping for the shift.  A burden being lifted.  My 9 yr old and 10 yr old girls asked her for CLOTHING this year!  Woo hoo.

Please sweet baby Jeebus- make it happen! I don’t think I can last another year with my knees wedged into an American Girl Doll bunk bed!

LOL – I hear you, and I think you just finally diagnosed my condition – OCD. My in laws are coming next weekend, and I’m dreading ALL. THE. CRAP!!!!!

The Dollar Store stays in business because of my MIL, and I’m already antsy with too much junk in this house. Time to do a little donating…

  • They ASKED for clothes!? My oldest says, “clothes aren’t a gift, they should be provided unconditionally!” holy shit! I’ve got my life set out for me don’t I!? HUGS sweetie, my IL’s love to give my kids the LOUDEST, most ANNOYING toys possible for Xmas. Asses.

  • I don’t think my mother in law has ever bought my children a toy that did not require batteries and/or make really obnoxious noises. I like to take said toys back over for the kids to play with while we’re there for Easter and then forget to take them home.

  • OMG… your MIL sounds like my mom… she goes overboard every year… my kids are older too now so we are hoping for no small toys.. thats what bugs me.. like the Polly Pockets and Littlest Pet Shops… ugh!

  • I’m not exactly OCD, but have an anxiety disorder that lends itself to many OCD tendencies. (as in…I can’t have an even number of small foods in my hand…it must be an odd number)

My thing is NOISE toys. Little bastards that make repetitive sounds in hellacious sequences of taps and tocks and beeps. And always. Always, my mother and sister buy my kids every available noise toy they can find.

    I hate them. Ugh.

  • Yep you’re like me. I live in an itty bitty house and it’s already cluttered. My parents though, buy toys out the ass for my kid. I HATE HATE HATE the day after Christmas. When there is piles of shit sitting around waiting to be put away and there’s no place to put it. Agh!
